Tymofii Brik. Patterns of on-line communication in Ukraine


Various social media have proven to be important in mobilizing social movements around the Globe. Ukrainians have witnessed an exponential growth of online communication in terms of numbers of communities and participation. However, there are virtually no empirical studies of the content of online communication in Ukraine. What are the patterns of online communication? How do people interact online? What kinds of topics engage individuals in discussions? In order to answer these questions I study the Maidan-related facebook page called Euromaidan. I analyze series of posts and comments from this facebook page that were publishing from November 2013 till June 2014. In addition I investigate the network properties of the ties between recipients of the information. Social Network Analysis (SNA) tools are used to analyze the spread of information via networks of people. Read more

The Euromaidan phenomenon of is the most remarkable subject of political, social and culturological research into the Ukrainian life in the end of 2013 – the beginning of 2014. Understandably there could be numerous research methods applied to examine it. We focused on the role of social networking in shaping public opinion and mobilizing mass support, and their function as the protests’ communication vehicle. The format of this research is the expert poll of opinion leaders of the Ukrainian segment of Facebook, Twitter and Vk.com.

Феномен Євромайдану становить собою найбільш яскравий об’єкт поточного соціологічного, політологічного та культурологічного вивчення українських реалій кінця 2013 – початку 2014 року. Зрозуміло, що напрямів, шляхів та методів вивчення може бути чимало. EuroMaidan Online

Carola Frediani on the EuroMaidan online – how the internet and social media have impacted the revolution.

From “How Ukraine’s EuroMaidan Revolution Played Out Online”:

After three months of demonstrations and fighting on the streets, ending with the ouster of President Viktor Yanukovych, there are few doubts that the Internet and social media played major roles in the revolution. While the Ukrainian press coverage was often limited, technology and online platforms not only materially sustained the protesters, but also helped them to reach an international audience.

Protestors began to mobilize on Nov. 21, 2013, after the Ukrainian government suspend preparations for the EU-Ukraine Association agreement. They gathered in Independence Square (Maidan) in Kiev and used the hashtags #euromaidan and #евромайдан on Twitter and Facebook. The Facebook posts of Hromadske TV journalist Mustafa Nayem, encouraging Ukranians to gather at Maidan, received more than 1,000 shares in a few hours. At the same time, a number of independent video streams were set up, on platforms like UStream, live broadcasting what was happening on the streets. Read more
